Unlike the German expressionists with their compositions with exaggerated colors and often brutal contours, even in the most unusual and unconventional depictions Schiele and the young Kokoschka always used nuanced tones. The key point in the art of the two Austrian painters is psychological introspection. Especially as regards Schiele, the figure and face of the individual are the place of expression and feelings. In addition to his ecstatic figures, Schiele created animated landscapes with trees or houses, in which the motifs become visions of rare expressive force. Each of these views, no matter whether with trees or houses, is a sort of cosmic landscape. Observing paintings such as Wall and house in front of a slope with a fence or Autumn tree moved by the wind we immediately realize how parched nature and the end of the summer are the paradigm of transience. With Schiele and Kokoschka, Gustav Klimt, Richard Gerstl, Koloman Moser and the other protagonists of modern Austrian art.
