ROBERTO MANDEL,
also known as Giuseppe Roberto Mandel (Treviso, 1895 – Naples, 1963), was an Italian historian and poet, father of Gabriele Mandel. A university professor of physics, he wrote mainly historical and scientific works, children's novels and textbooks.
A major during the First World War, he suffered a permanent disability. Awarded with various honors, he had, as a captain in the service of the General Staff of the Italian armed forces, easy access to secret archives, which allowed him to publish an authoritative illustrated history of the First World War, in six volumes. From the beginning of the Fascist regime, he held important positions in corporations and in the Party.
He was a close friend of Gabriele D'Annunzio (who became godfather to his son Gabriele Mandel).
The strong bond of friendship with Gabriele D'Annunzio began with the sharing of national and social ideals and common ideas, including Masonic ones, of individual and social elevation.
His opposition to the racial laws and Italy's entry into the war led to his imprisonment, towards the end of the Second World War, in the San Vittore prison, together with his son Gabriele. [...]
