Venice '79 photography was one of the largest events dedicated to photography held in Italy. Under the patronage of UNESCO, the municipality of Venice and the International Center of Photography, from 16 June to 16 September 1979, twenty-six exhibitions, forty-six workshops and a full programme of seminars and conferences took place in Venice: 3,500 photos by 500 artists were exhibited and 45 of the world's best photographers taught their approach to photography to 1,000 students of all nationalities.
The exhibitions took place in various spaces of the city: at the Museo Correr, at Palazzo Fortuny, at the Magazzini del Sale alle Zattere, at Palazzo Querini Stampalia and in the Central Pavilion of the Giardini della Biennale.
