In 1958, Bachelard published La Poétique de l'Espace - The Poetics of Space - a densely lyrical, almost magical, book about our experience of architecture. In it, he traverses the realms in which we live, inside and out. He records the significance of the old tower and the peasant hut, the smallest coffin and the shadiest corner. This passionate journey through space is also an exploration of the recesses of the psyche, the corridors of the mind. The undertaking required an "unlearning" of the very rationalistic way of thinking that Bachelard had assumed as a philosopher of science. Poetic imagination, unlike science, is independent of causality. Bachelard had to learn to be receptive to the images of poetry whenever they appeared.
