DIALECTIC OF ENLIGHTENMENT
MAX HORKHEIMER AND THEODOR W. ADORNO
TRANSLATED BY JOHN CUMMING
A Continuum Book, THE SEABURY PRESS NEW YORK.
Second Edition, 1972
DIALECTIC OF ENLIGHTENMENT
A major study of modern culture, Dialectic of Enlightenment lived a clandestine existence among the homeless left of the Federal Republic of Germany for many years until its final publication in West Germany in 1969. Originally composed by its two illustrious authors during their exile in California in 1944, the book can be considered a monument of classic twentieth-century German progressive social theory.
"It is worth reading as an introduction to the peculiar synthesis of Marx, Freud, Nietzsche and Heidegger commonly associated with the name of Herbert Marcuse." - Times Literary Supplement.
Max Horkheimer, founder and long-time director of the renowned Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt, is professor emeritus of philosophy and sociology at the University of Frankfurt.
Theodor W. Adorno, author of Negative Dialectics, worked with Max Horkheimer at the New York Institute for Social Research and later taught at the University of Frankfurt until his death in 1969.
