JEAN COCTEAU
The Requiem
This long poem of four thousand lines is the poetic testament of Jean Cocteau. It was written during a long illness in which the author wrote between dog and wolf, until he was able to reread it later. This remarkable rhapsody was the object of a real deciphering over the course of three years. The poet wanted to give it the character of a witness object. You witness a state in which unconsciousness prevails over consciousness. Control no longer works, or at least it only works to the extent that man always maintains control of his mechanisms.
The Requiem is more Góngora than Mallarmean syntax. The reader must punctuate himself and grasp the thread without which he would be lost in a verbal labyrinth.
The poet invites us on a Dantean walk where spaces, streets, and spectacles intertwine in the mysterious darkness of the human body.
It is a reclining figure speaking, with eyes closed and hands clasped, lying on the river of the dead.
